. it was part of americans for obama's and prosperity agenda. you think this is a best way for the organization to ge their point across? i think it's pretty clever. >> they have failed to deliver mortgage help the millions of americans who are upside down. on this one, however, remember that the economy worldwide have gone into the tank. that is one of the reasons that gas prices came down. melissa: absolutely, but it is still very clever. [laughter] >> it is the first presidential debate coming up, and it will be that you can bet your $1.84 that they will be talking about energy a lot. this makes the point that barack obama has done everything possible to raise energy prices. years ago we said electricity rates will skyrocket in terms of slow walking permitting, the keystone pipeline,. melissa: the man hates gasoline. >> it's clever, but if you want to hit the administration where they are truly weak, i'm talking about since last year, but he one-hit the president where he is absolutely week, mortgages, mortgages, mortgages. the administration has done nothing to help middle-class americans w
. the economy remains a top issue for voters. and many americans are anticipating a victory from the president. pew research reports 51% of voters say they think obama will win in tonight's broadcast. an analyst with the sunlight foundation tells first business that the pressure is on for the romney campaign. "in the polls it looks like romney is falling behind and falling further behind in the battleground states. although nationally it's a very close election, he's been hammered in the battleground states. the debates can be a great equalizer for him, but also that increases the pressure on him, whereas i think we are going to see barack obama playing a lot more defense." that was bill allison of the sunlight foundation. at long last, a wall street firm is being sued for fraud in connection with the housing crash. the suit was filed monday by the new york attorney general. the lawsuit holds jp morgan chase responsible for action by wall street firm bear stearns, which it acquired in 2008. the sold bear stearns prior to the housing collapse from 2006-2007. the attorney general says investors
there is a difference. part of the philosophy of president obama is trying to get as many americans as possible dependent on government so that the democrats can stay in power in perpetuity. the reason i think that is failing is, even those americans, if you break down that 47%, there is a significant chunk of people, receiving social security, who have paid into it their entire life. that is very different from being dependent on welfare. that is a critical safety net our society has counted on that we need to insure remain strong for generations to come. even those who are receiving welfare right now, most americans do not want to stay dependent on government. they want to work for the american dream. they want to work to provide for themselves and their families. i think that is why the obama administration's objective is essentially using bread and circuses to make as many people as possible dependent on government, to keep voting democratic, is not succeeding. americans want to stand on their own feet. >> that is the craziest thing i ever heard of my life. you are accusing the president of
that does that will win the test. american people are going to sit at home looking for details. president obama is going to continue to do that. he's been having that conversation for some time. mitt romney has not done that. tonight offers him the opportunity to do that. >> we are not talking about accomplishing a lot. two or three things to accomplish. one is to show he is in command, he's in control, he understands the job of the presidency. he put barack obama on the defense where he should be given his horrific record on the economy and national security. i think he will do that and be tough with the president. i don't think the president will react well to that. i think that will be the key moment of the night. >> president obama and mitt romney will square off in two more debates, the next is october 16th in up state new york. paul ryan and vice president biden will have theirs next thursday. you can watch it here on nbc 4. coverage begins at 9:00. will you watch tonight's debate? i will. let us know on the news 4 today facebook page. >>> one of d.c. councilmembers o opponents are
things and do things and have an impact on the american influence that is really different from what president obama was doing? >> unfortunately my basic thesis is there's a tremendous degree of continuity at all times between presidents that we already saw i would say, and jessica and i have a running discussion i was going to say argument, disagreement which has begun i think probably around january of 2009. but i would say that many people have been struck. even "the new york times" rights of the this continuity between obama and george w. bush for that matter. so, any president in my view only changes things 10 degrees one way, 10 degrees the other. there will be some issues. obviously, you know, there's no question that romney takes a different view on how to deal with russia and you probably see a different policy towards russia. on iran is a harder call and one thing we have not spoken about, and i think maybe you were going to get to it eventually -- >> we are only 25 minutes in. >> okay. since i considered it to be not a and unreasonable possibility regardless of who was in
"obama"] you know, my opponent is a big believer in top down economics. he thinks that if we just spend another $5 trillion on tax cuts for the wealthiest americans, if we get rid of regulations on wall street, then all our problems will be solved and jobs and prosperity will trickle down on all of you, debts will disappear, we will live happily ever after. there is only one problem with that. we tried that in the ticket before i became president. it didn't work. top down economics never works. we don't need to double down on the same trickle-down policies that got us into this mess in the first place. we don't need policies that just help folks at the very top. that is not how the country grows. that is not how we succeed. we succeed when at the middle class gets a bigger, when more people have a chance to get ahead and live up to their god- given potential. far when we very have leaders who write off half the nation as a bunch of the victims who don't take responsibility for their lives. let me tell you, i have been to nevada in line. you guys may get tired of me. but as i travel arou
